“You look beautiful,” Bruno assures me for probably the hundredth time this morning. I’m standing in the middle of the tiny combined kitchen and living room space of the guest house, looking down worriedly at my outfit. It’s just starting to get hot here in Italy, and considering I arrived here at the Lomaglio residence wearing my filthy sweatshirt and jeans, it was high time for a change of wardrobe. Unfortunately, I can’t even dream of fitting into Mrs. Lomaglio’s clothing—she is both much shorter and considerably rounder than I am. So Domenica, being the ever-helpful and generous girl she is, offered me some of her clothes for now, until I have time to pick out some new stuff for myself.

But Domenica is a seventeen-year-old girl who is very, very slender and not at all pregnant, so her clothing is a little bit tight and youthful for my body. I’m currently wearing one of her dresses, a knee-length blue frock with white flowers and spaghetti straps, along with a pair of Mrs. Lomaglio’s sandals. Everything fits to some degree, but I still feel pretty weird. It’s strange, you’d think after wearing a ton of hand-me-down donated clothes at the women’s shelter, this would be second nature. But somehow, it’s weirder when you know the people whose clothing it is. Or maybe it’s just weird because I only barely know them. We just met, and now I’m living in their guest house and wearing their clothes.

Oh, and I’m pregnant with their long-lost son’s baby.

Just a recipe for awkwardness, all around. But in their defense, the Lomaglios have been overwhelmingly kind and generous, constantly offering me more food, more drinks, asking if I’m comfortable, if there’s anything else I need. It’s very, very nice of them, but after spending so much time with my own uptight, closed-off mother for so long, it’s a shock to my system to spend time with such a warm, loving family. It’s not that my own mother doesn’t love me, of course, she just has a very different way of showing it—and by that I mean she rarely shows it at all.

Bruno’s family, on the other hand, is almost over the top. They hug each other, they touch each other’s faces, they profess their love like it’s the most natural thing in the world. It’s something I never would have pictured for Bruno when I first met him. He seemed so tough and cool. Too cool to have come from such a cuddly family. But the more I get to know him, the clearer it is to me that this is how he grew up. He may be a powerful, imposing, even dangerous man, but underneath that jagged exterior, love and loyalty come before all else.

“I’m not sure my boobs quite fit in this dress,” I mutter, looking down at my unusually impressive cleavage in this tiny dress. Bruno walks over and puts his arms around me, smiling.

“Looks pretty good to me,” he remarks cheekily.

I roll my eyes.
